presidential music to bringis to this topic, which is really dominating the headlines today. president obama and republican rival mitt romney met face to face last night in denver, colorado for their first u.s. presidential debate. it really focused mostly on the economy. with a mnt to onth to go before election, both men had to prove to voters that they're the right man for the country. john harwood got a firsthand view of the debate and filed this report from denver. >> the first of three presidential debates here at the university of denver was a strong one for mitt romney. he came out very aggressively in confronting president obama on his record over the last four years, taking on on the president over his failure to reduce the budget deficit, over job creation, over obamacare, over the regulation of wall street and dodd-frank. had some success in pulling the election back from a choice election as president obama wants to be about their visions going forward into a referendum on president obama's record in the first four years. mitt romney looked very comfortable and pleased to be on t

the last presidential -- the first presidential debate. obama now at 45%, romney at 49%. that's a significant shift from before the debate when the president was ahead by eight points, 51% to 43%. but let's dig a little bit deeper right now. this question, all likely voters who were asked answered, obama doesn't know how to turn the economy around, do you agree or disagree? 54% said they agree with that. 44% they say disagree. that sounds like trouble for the president's reelection campaign. >> that does. that number -- first of all, the top-line numbers are surprising because i believe pew has been a pr pre-pro obama poll. pew's been pretty good for obama. the top-line numbers are really surprising. have to see if other polls show the same thing. but as you point out, that's the key number, the economy. how does obama get out of this box of voters being not happy with the economy? but up until now, willing to perhaps give him another chance. i'm surprised. i'm surprised the debate turned things around, if they indeed have, that quickly. obama has two more debates to turn thin

putting one face there, ben bernanke will stay on if barack obama is reelected. on the right-hand side we see potential romney cabinet selections, glenn hubbard, he's been an economic adviser to both romney's presidential campaigns, last time and again this time, and john taylor at stanford university is also somebody who is mentioned frequently. look at state department as well that's obviously one that is a moving part right now because this interesting tension in washington on the obama side if he's reelected between john kerry who might have done himself some good with his speech at the democratic national convention, and susan rice is somebody who is often mentioned. now, this recent flap over libya and what the united states said or did not say about the situation there might have damaged her prospects a little bit. we'll have to watch that one, on the romney side robert zoellick, former world bank president and richard haass, president of the council of foreign relations mention there had and treasury secretary we talked about some of the names for the obama cabinet starting with t
